TOOLSFirst-year buy list
The Tool Bill.
What you're actually going to spend on tools before your first year ends. Don't let a recruiter or a school tell you it's "a couple hundred bucks." It's not.
§ 01 — Pick a trade
Total damage
$705–$1,500
Realistic range for your first year. Lower end = buy used/import brands. Higher end = brand-name pro tools (Klein, Fluke, Ridgid, Snap-On).
How journeymen actually buy tools
- Day one: belt, basic pliers, screwdrivers, tape, hammer, headlamp, boots, PPE.
- First 90 days: trade- specific specialty tools — meters, torch kits, gauges, cutters.
- Year one+: upgrade the cheap ones to pro-grade as you figure out what you actually use.
- Never finance tools at 21%+ APR. The Snap-On truck is not your friend.
