How to Become
a Boilermaker.
Builds, installs, and repairs boilers, pressure vessels, and other large industrial steel structures. Boomer trade — heavy travel for premium pay. Here's the honest path — from zero to journeyman, with the numbers and warnings that nobody puts in the brochure.
The Path.
The union apprenticeship is the gold standard — earn while you learn, no debt, progressive wage increases. Here's the honest step-by-step for the Boilermakers International (IBB) path.
Contact your local Boilermakers lodge — Boilermakers International (IBB) is the path. Most industrial work in power, refinery, paper, and shipyard is union-only. Find your Lodge through boilermakers.org.
Apply to the apprenticeship — Boilermaker apprenticeships are 4 years, structured around welding, rigging, and pressure vessel work. The application typically requires a HS diploma, basic physical, and aptitude test.
Get your welding certifications early — AWS D1.1 structural and ASME Section IX pressure vessel certs are the core credentials. The apprenticeship covers this, but going in with even basic weld certification helps.
Get your confined-space certification — boilermakers live in confined spaces. Tanks, boilers, pressure vessels, and ductwork are the job site. Claustrophobia disqualifies you. Be honest before you invest time here.
Complete the apprenticeship and go journeyman — Boilermaker journeyman wages are at the top of the industrial trades. The work is sporadic and travel-heavy, particularly for major plant shutdowns (called 'outages' or 'turnarounds').
Budget for the gaps — boilermaker work is feast-or-famine. During major outages you might work 60 hours a week at double-time-and-a-half. Between projects you might be off for weeks. Financial discipline separates the career boilermakers from the ones who leave.
The Money.
What the Brochure Leaves Out.
Heavy travel. Expect months on the road for major shutdowns.
Confined space work is constant. Claustrophobia disqualifies you.
BLS projects slight decline as coal plants retire — but power, refinery, and shipyard work continues.
Requirements by State.
Every state has different licensing requirements, exam providers, and code editions. Choose your state for the specific path in your market.
